Wayne Wessel

Wayne was named the 1966 Glen Rock High School Athlete of the Year. Wayne started varsity soccer (2 years), basketball (2 years), and baseball (3 years) during his high school career. He was captain of the soccer and baseball teams.

Wayne played both goalie and forward on Coach Dick LaRue’s soccer teams and was named All-County in his junior year. He was a two year starter in basketball as forward/guard. While playing baseball for Coach Carl Zaisser’s teams, Wayne was 6-0 as a sophomore pitcher on Glen Rock’s first North Bergen Interscholastic League championship. He also played first base and the outfield. Wayne’s three-year pitching record was 18-6. He was selected All-County in his sophomore and senior years. He pitched for Springfield College’s baseball team for two years.

After college, Wayne taught physical education and coached baseball at Old Tappan Middle School. His 15-year record there was 142-39. He also coached the Demarest High School freshmen team for four years and captured a Bergen County championship. Wayne also coached the Old Tappan High School freshmen soccer team for ten years and the Old Tappan varsity soccer team for 12 years. Coach Wessel’s varsity teams won 146 games during that time.

Wayne also served as the Glen Rock Director of Recreation for nineteen years. He is married to Sue Francis (GRHS ’66) and lives in Pennsylvania.
