Megan Burke was a standout in Soccer and Track at GR. She was the Female Athlete of The Year for her class in 1989,1990 and 1991 and led the Soccer and Track teams to outstanding seasons.
In soccer Megan was 1st Team All-League, 2nd Team All-County, and 1st Team All-State Group I in her senior year. She had 64 career goals with 29 of them in her senior year.
In Track Megan was truly spectacular, dominating in the sprints and the jumps.
In 1990 she was 1st Team All-League, and 1st Team All-County in the long jump. She is one of the few athletes in NJ history to win an event, long jump four years in a row at the State Group Meet. In 1991 Megan had one of the greatest years in Glen Rock, and Bergen County, history. She was the League and County Group Champion in the 100yard, 200yard, long jump, and triple jump. At the State Sectional she won the 100 yard, 200 yard, and long jump (the triple jump was not a state meet event back then). Megan then won the long jump for the 4th year in a row at the State Group Meet. She also went on to take 2nd in the long jump at the State Meet of Champions, and then took 2nd at the Eastern States Championships, losing only to a girl from Maryland. Megan’s long jump that day of 18′-113/4″ is still the Glen Rock school record, and is still in the top 5 in Bergen County history. Her best meet may have been the Bergen County Meet of Champions, where she won the long jump with 5 of her 6 jumps being over 18′. She was chosen Field Events Performer of the Meet as a result. In the triple jump and long jump Megan was 1st Team All-League, 1st Team All-County, and 1st Team All-State ( all groups). In 1999 The Record acknowledged her excellence by choosing her for the sprints and jumps on the All-Century Team.
Megan went on to Shippensburg University where she majored in elementary education and returned to Glen Rock to teach (1998-2004). In 2003 she was chosen Coleman School Teacher of the Year.
She is now married to Glen Rock graduate Matt Plessing and lives in Middletown, NJ with their 2 children. She is Director of the pre-school in Middletown.
