Kate Hanley Garrette

Kate was a gifted athlete and leader who received All-County recognition – and led Glen Rock as captain – in three sports. Kate earned 11 varsity letters and was twice named Glen Rock High School Athlete of the Year. Among the many individual awards she received, Kate was named to the NJGSCA All-State team in soccer and to the All- Suburban team in track and field in five events
Kate led Coach Tracy Trebiano’s soccer teams to four league titles, two state sectional championships and two state group co-championships during her career at Glen Rock. She was also a spirited basketball player for Coach Sue Sileo.

A remarkably versatile runner and jumper competing for Coach DJ Nimphius, Kate set numerous school and state sectional track and field records in the long jump, hurdles (intermediate and high), medleys and relays (4 x 400, 4 x 800). As a senior she was state sectional champion in five events, won six events at the BMOC and won state group championships in two events, setting a state Group One record in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles. She still holds the sectional record in the long jump and 100 meter high hurdles. Kate led her track teams to three state group championships.

Kate continued her track career on scholarship at Miami of Ohio where as team captain she competed in the pentathlon and heptathlon. She finished fourth in the heptathlon at the MAC championships and has the sixth highest score in the school’s history in that event.

After earning a second degree (in nursing) from NYU in 2009, Kate joined the Children’s National Medical Center as an RN in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit.

Kate married her husband Tom in 2007 and the Garrettes welcomed their daughter Lila Judith to the family earlier this year. They live in Washington, DC.
