Harry Comiskey devoted his skill, time and vision to Glen Rock High School as an English Teacher and Coach (Girls’ and Boys’ Tennis and Boys’ Varsity and Freshman Basketball) for 39 years.
Harry attended Rice High School in the Bronx and Iona College before gaining a Master’s Degree at Seton Hall University. He taught at Vancouver (British Columbia) College and at two parochial schools for seven years before coming to Glen Rock in 1969.
Coach Comiskey led the girls’ tennis program from its early days (1970’s) and the boys’ program for many years, for a combined tennis record of 770-155 and an 83% winning percentage. He led the girls to countless league championships as well as eight State Sectional and two (each) State and County Groups 1 and 2 Championships. He also led the boys to numerous league championships as well as Group State Sectional Championships, Bergen County Championships and one Group 1, State Championship.
The year 2000 was the apogee for Glen Rock tennis, as both the girls’ and boys’ programs won the championships at the league, group county, group state sectional and group state levels. Both teams were recognized as “Team of the Year” by The Record, and Harry won Coach of the Year honors across the board, including being named as National Coach of the Year.
Harry was the Boys’ Varsity Basketball coach from 1975 until 1988, guiding many great players including 1000 point scorers Kevin Jones and Rich Gashler. He also led the Freshman Team for many years and the Frosh Panthers went 20-0 and won the County tournament in 1997.
Coach Comiskey lives in Fair Lawn. He has four children and nine grandchildren.
