The 2003 Boys’ Track Team captured the first Boys Track Team State Championship in Glen Rock High School’s history.
Before 2003, Glen Rock had won Bergen County Team Championships and then State Sectional Championships in 1995 through 1997 and again in 1999 through 2002 (all in Group 1, except the 1996 team won in Group 2). After setting a team scoring record in winning the State Sectional Championship, the 2003 team won the first of two consecutive Group 1, State Championships.
The Panthers had an 11-0 dual meet record and won the BPSL League Championship with victories by Tom Gengler (Discus and Shot Put), Robbie Grammer (400 and 400 hurdles), Mark Hannon (Javelin and Long Jump), Ryan McCann (800 and meters), Chris Andretta (High Jump), Jeff Berland (110 meter high hurdles), Timmy Murphy (Pole Vault) and the 1600 relay foursome. They then won the Group 1, Bergen County Championship with Mark Hannon (100), Robbie Grammer (400), Ryan McCann (800 and 1600) and Tim Murphy (Pole Vault) taking first place finishes.
The team won the Group 1, State Sectional Championship – scoring in all 16 of the meet’s events. Mark Hannon (100 and 200), Rob Grammer (400) and Ryan McCann (800 and 1600) took individual first place finishes and the team won the 1600 relay. The team’s total of 136 points outscored the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams – and set a Group 1, State Sectional record that has not been beaten since that year.
Finally, at the season-ending Group 1, State Championship, led by Ryan McCann’s victory in the 1600 and solid performances by all, Glen Rock defeated all of the other Group 1 high schools in New Jersey.
