The 1999 Girls Soccer team stands at the pinnacle of the eleven teams that have won or shared the New Jersey Girls Soccer State Championship.
The 1999 team was a very young team. It returned only four starters from a team that had finished the prior season as Group 1, Runners Up with a 20-3-1 record. However, the combination of returning players (led by senior Midfielder Jody Gabel) and key newcomers (including Hall of Fame inductees freshmen Forwards Leah Jerome and Kim Mineo) produced a team that delivered the school’s first outright Girls Soccer State Championship since 1987.
After easily winning the BPSL League Championship, the Rockers dominated their opponents in the State Tournament. They defeated North Arlington by a score of 3-0 to win the Group 1, Section 1 Championship. They then won the Group 1, North Jersey Championship by destroying North Warren by a score of 6-0. Leah Jerome scored four of those six goals, and Kim Mineo and junior Kristin Jerome scored one goal each.
In the State Final, the Rockers dominated Rumson-Fair Haven. In the 18th minute, Kristin Jerome delivered a 30-yard pass to a diagonal running Kim Mineo that Mineo headed into the upper left corner of Rumson’s goal. Glen Rock continued to shut down Rumson’s defense while generating multiple offensive attacks. Finally, with an assist from Leah Jerome, senior Kim Bonaguaro scored a second goal with seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 2-0.
The 1999 Girls Soccer Team finished the season with a 23-1-1 record, with Leah Jerome, Jody Gabel and Kim Mineo each scoring 20 or more goals – despite the fact that Jerome and Mineo, as freshmen, often did not start — and only allowing a state-low and then school-record three goals.
On the 13-member All Suburban Team, Jody Gabel and junior Jenna Mike-Mayer (Defense) were named to the First Team, Leah Jerome was named Freshman of the Year, and Coach and Hall of Fame InducteeTracy Trobiano was named Coach of the Year. In addition, Kristin Jerome (Defense), Kim Bonafuaro (Forward) and Kim Mineo (Forward) were named to the Second Team. In addition, Gabel was named to the All County First Team, Mike-Mayer was named to the All County Second Team, and Kristin Jerome and Leah Jerome were both named to the All County Third Team. Buonogaro, junior Lauren Haner (Midfield), junior Katie Singer (Goalie), and sophomore Elizabeth Tampe (Forward) were awarded Honorable Mention. In addition, several players had significant success playing soccer after high school.
